Susan Muddles Through

by Jane Shaw

"Aunt Lucy must be off her head," says Midge, and on hearing that Aunt Lucy has invited their arch-enemies the Gascoignes to Scotland with them, the other Carmichaels agree. Their cousin Susan is dismayed, but not unduly so; for nothing can mar for her the prospect of a holiday on her ‘native heath’.
But even in Scotland Susan and the Carmichaels are thwarted and worsted at every turn - by Peregrine and his air-gun, by Gabrielle and her incredible popularity, and by Adrian and his Inverness cape, hairy tweeds and deerstalker. Susan, however, cannot be kept down for long and soon she has decided to help Mrs. MacDonald recover her money, and, of course, to unravel a few mysteries at the same time. Why does the bird-watcher, for instance, know nothing about birds? Who was whispering on the shore at midnight? What became of the missing receipt?
As usual, Susan muddles through in the end, but not before they all have some very exciting, and hilarious, adventures.
